Captain Teddy

Sixteen-year-old Jay wakes up in the middle of the night to use the bathroom, half-asleep and already annoyed at life. On the way back to bed, he hears a sound-scratching, sharp and deliberate-coming from his little sister's room. He opens her door expecting the usual: a bad dream, a stuffed animal falling, maybe the house settling. Instead, he finds something that makes his stomach drop.
His sister's teddy bear-Captain-is standing upright in the center of the room like a person. And without moving his stitched mouth, the bear speaks in a calm, night-watch voice: "There's one in the closet, and two under the bed." Captain gives Jay a choice: shut the door or back him up-because if Jay panics or makes noise, it only makes things worse.
Jay quickly learns the "monsters" aren't just hiding in the dark. They're hunting through attention. The closet whispers in familiar voices-his mom's, his dad's-trying to bait him into answering. Captain warns him that names are hooks and sound is food, and the worst thing Jay can do is "check" the darkness to prove what he saw. The creatures under the bed don't need to fully emerge; even their grinning teeth and tapping fingers pushing into the edge of light feel like they're testing rules, waiting for Jay to break first.
As the night escalates, the house itself stops feeling safe. Doors become "mouths." The hallway stays unnaturally quiet when Jay's sister screams, as if the house is refusing to summon help. Captain drills them into survival tactics that feel ridiculous until they work: don't look, don't speak back, and force a "staring contest" so Jay's sister keeps her eyes on him-not on the doors or the shadows trying to lure her. The horror spreads beyond the bedroom: mirrors, framed photos, and glossy surfaces start acting like gateways. Captain's warning turns blunt and terrifying: "Every reflection is a mouth now."
With Jay's parents pulled into the nightmare, the family tries to reclaim control by building "human rules" faster than the monster can rewrite them-salt lines, taped switches, dulling anything reflective, and moving to the basement where concrete and clutter feel safer than glass and screens. Captain's strategy is strange but consistent: make everything boring. Make it routine. Make it ordinary enough that the monster can't twist it into a story it controls. When the creature tries to seal them in, Captain calls for "the oldest rule": stories-boring, true narration that leaves the monster nothing dramatic to grab onto.
Eventually, the family reaches out for help and ends up in a place that should be the safest thing in the world: a police station. But the monster adapts. It can't invent new words, yet it can ride on sound and steal authority by copying voices. One careless moment-Jay's sister saying "Captain" out loud near radios-gives the monster a new weapon: it starts issuing calm, official orders in Captain's voice, including the most dangerous one imaginable: "Cancel the call. It's a false alarm."
Jay survives by doing what Captain taught him from the start: refusing drama and delivering the truth in the flattest voice possible-enough to snap an adult's pride into place and make them say "No" to the wrong voice.
By dawn, the monster weakens. Captain promises something that feels like hope: "Daylight makes mouths tired." The family is escorted out into a graying morning that feels thin and fragile, like it could rip. Jay wants to believe it's over-until he hears his own voice behind him whisper, amused: "Good story." And then, limp in his sister's arms, Captain whispers without moving his stitched mouth: "Now tell it again."
The sun is up.
But the book ends with the creeping suspicion that the monster didn't lose... it just learned.
