In classrooms across America, South Asian students are often held up as the model minority: proof that hard work leads to success, that the system is fair, that race is no longer a barrier. But behind that stereotype is a more complicated truth: South Asian American students feel pressure from being held to that stereotype, often face microaggressions or outright racism, may feel disconnected from their peers or teachers, and, critically, because of the model minority myth, may have their needs overlooked in schools.

Brown Voices: South Asian American Experiences in Schools draws on Dr. Punita Rice's original doctoral research, participant narratives, and in-depth conversations with South Asian American writers, artists, and public figures to examine what South Asian Americans really experienced in the classroom, and how low teacher cultural proficiency, especially belief in the model minority myth, shapes the support these students receive, or don't.

The research underlying this book was conducted under the Johns Hopkins University IRB, and components have been published in the peer-reviewed Berkeley Review of Education. But this is not written only for an academic audience; it is written for South Asian American adults who grew up feeling unseen in school hallways, for teachers who want to understand the students in their classrooms, and for parents navigating the tension between cultural expectations and an education system that rarely sees their children fully.

Brown Voices is part scholarship, part oral history, and part call to action. It takes a community's stories seriously and asks American schools to do the same.

Previously published as South Asian American Experiences in Schools: Brown Voices from the Classroom by Lexington Books/Rowman & Littlefield, 2019. Rights reverted to author, 2025. This edition has been fully revised and includes new interviews and updated perspectives.
