As the pain of his wife's murder and his own devastating injuries recede, psychoanalyst and reluctant spy Dr. Wilson Coffey begins to reclaim his life. He has become intrigued by a docudrama about the first Nuremberg trial, fascinated by the evil on display in the courtroom.
After presenting a talk to a group of trainee psychoanalysts, he is approached by a colleague, Marion Morgan, asking him to investigate the death of Mary Hart, her grandmother, apparently murdered in Nuremberg at the end of the 2nd World War. Why did she ask him? And why now, so many years later? Wilson wants to refuse the quest. But the coincidence of the timing of this murder with the trial, as well as his own memories of Nuremberg, persuade him to take up the challenge. What he discovers draws him further into the lives of the Nazi prisoners and those attempting to make sense of the minds of those who perpetrated the Holocaust.
The mysteries surrounding the death of the English woman Mary Hart have repercussions beyond the search for Marion's grandmother's killer.
