Bound for Natal

Bound for Natal

For some journeys, survival is only the beginning.

Born into poverty in a small village in colonial India, Newour's future seems already written.

Bound by caste, burdened by debt, and trapped beneath the weight of colonial rule, he dreams only of providing a better life for his family. When a recruiter arrives offering passage to the British colony of Natal in South Africa, Newour faces an impossible choice: remain in a life of hardship, or risk everything on a voyage into the unknown.

Together with his wife, Timalee, and their young son, he leaves behind the only home he has ever known.

What follows is an unforgettable journey across continents, cultures, and generations.

From the crowded depots of Calcutta and the perilous crossing of the Indian Ocean to the sugar plantations of Natal, Newour and Timalee must endure hardship, loss, injustice, and sacrifice. Yet through every challenge, they discover something stronger than fear: the power of family, the strength of community, and the determination to build a future of their own.

As years become decades, children are born, families grow, and new lives take root in an unfamiliar land. What begins as one family's struggle for survival becomes a multigenerational story of courage, identity, and belonging. Their journey mirrors that of thousands of Indians who left their homeland in search of opportunity and helped shape the future of South Africa.

Inspired by real events, rich in historical detail, Bound for Natal is a sweeping historical fiction novel that explores migration, family, faith, sacrifice, and the enduring human desire to belong. Spanning generations and continents, it is both an intimate family story and an epic portrait of the Indian diaspora.

Perfect for readers of historical family sagas such as Pachinko, The Covenant, and The Four Winds, Bound for Natal is a powerful story of hope, resilience, and the extraordinary legacy created by ordinary people.

A captivating historical novel about family, survival, and the courage to begin again.
