When Jason Gates was ten years old, he found a piece of metal on a beach in Florida. He wasn't supposed to know what it was. By the time he was eighteen, the U.S. government had taken him out of high school in a black Lincoln and given him three things: a perfect-score IQ test, a clearance he was too young to understand, and a question. Thirty years later, off the books and out of the cold, Jason finds a Phoenician relief in Athens with a glyph he has seen only once before - on the metal fragment from his childhood. A friend in Berlin sends him a satellite scan of the same glyph carved into a wall beneath the Khafre pyramid. Then the friend dies of polonium poisoning.
