AFTER 150 YEARS is a short work of historical fiction, a novella told in ten chapters that defy the chronological order of events. Its story unfolds across Europe in the age of the Austro-Hungarian Empire, and later in Croatia, Argentina, and Paraguay. The historical horizon stretches from 1830 to 2022. The sea is the Adriatic; the island, one among more than twelve hundred scattered along the Croatian coast.
Darko and Petar are two friends bound by loyalty and hardship. Together they face countless trials, though Petar always seems to bear the heavier burden. After repeated disappointments in Europe, they set their sights on Paraguay, hoping to carve out a future in the New World. Darko, gifted with wisdom, shares his knowledge freely, guiding Petar as best he can.
Their journey carries them first to Argentina, where they arrive in the shadow of the yellow fever epidemic of 1871. At the Port of Buenos Aires, they are received by Don Raffaello, before travelling onward to Paraguay to begin anew, in the aftermath of the War of the Triple Alliance.
Darko marries Ester, a gentle and tender Paraguayan woman, and together they raise seven daughters. Yet despite achieving all that a man might hope for, Darko is periodically overtaken by a deep and lingering melancholy-an unseen and terrible presence that takes root within him and passes, like a shadow, through the generations that follow.
In the end, it is Petra, of the fourth generation, who will make a defining choice and find liberation in the Holy Words.
What flows through the blood may also be redeemed.
A dark inheritance.
A sacred word.
A release.
When time opens, the wound finds its voice.
Inherited pain is given a name.
Memory becomes a form of salvation.
A family marked by time.
A woman willing to break the cycle.
For one hundred and fifty years, silence was the legacy.
Fate is written across generations-until someone chooses to rewrite it.
The past remembers.
The present is a choice.
Some stories require more than a century to reach their ending.
This is a story in which time does not advance: it returns.
Four generations.
An invisible legacy.
One decision that alters everything.
The past never entirely passes.
The deepest inheritance is not always visible.
At times, freedom arrives only after more than a century.
Time does not erase wounds; it bequeaths them.
There are pains that travel quietly from generation to generation, waiting to be released.
A century may not be enough to forget, but it may suffice to remember differently.
Memory, too, has blood.
And sometimes, redemption.
What remains unnamed endures.
What is faced is transformed.
Some wounds require more than a century to be named.
Some decisions require only a single lifetime to be made.
