Hilda Christensen's A Textbook of Plant Dyeing was first published in 1908 and for decades served as an important handbook for Norwegian arts and crafts. It explains how leaves, bark, roots, flowers, berries, lichens and other natural materials can give wool and textiles a rich range of colours.
The book guides the reader through dye materials, mordanting, dye baths and practical recipes, while offering a vivid glimpse into a tradition developed long before synthetic dyes became dominant.
This edition is based on the eighth printing from 1943. The language has been rendered in modern English, while the original content, measurements, recipes and historical terminology have been preserved as far as possible. It should therefore be read both as a practical handbook and as a document of its time.
