Shen Kuo (1032-1096), courtesy name Cunzhong, was a native of Qiantang in Hangzhou. He was a renowned scientist in Chinese history and one of the key political reformers of the Northern Song dynasty. Shen Kuo's research spanned numerous fields, including mathematics, physics, chemistry, astronomy, geography, biology, agriculture, medicine, literature, history, music, and fine arts. He was a polymath who bridged the natural sciences and the humanities. His Dream Pool Essays is hailed as an exemplary encyclopedic work of ancient China.
Guided by a spirit of pragmatism and innovation, Shen Kuo actively participated in the reforms led by Wang Anshi. However, his political career was fraught with setbacks, and in his later years, he retired to his Dream Brook Garden. This book, drawing on historical texts and extensive existing research, summarizes Shen Kuo's life and his achievements in both the natural sciences and the humanities. It explores his scientific and humanistic thought and assesses his place in the history of Chinese science and politics.
