A Glossary of Colloquial and Popular French

"A Glossary of Colloquial and Popular French: For the Use of English Readers and Travellers" is an indispensable reference work designed to bridge the gap between formal literary French and the vibrant, lived language of the streets, cafes, and everyday life. Compiled by esteemed scholars L. E. Kastner and J. Marks, this comprehensive glossary provides English-speaking readers and tourists with a clear guide to the idioms, slang, and popular expressions that are often omitted from standard dictionaries.

The work meticulously categorizes a wide array of colloquialisms, offering not only definitions but also insights into the nuances of usage and social context. Whether exploring French literature or navigating the complexities of travel in France, this volume serves as an essential tool for understanding the authentic vernacular of the early 20th century. By focusing on "popular" language-the speech of the people-it captures a dynamic period in the evolution of the French tongue.

This scholarly yet accessible guide remains a valuable resource for linguists, students of the French language, and historical researchers interested in the socio-linguistic landscape of the era. Its clear organization and practical focus make it a timeless companion for anyone seeking a deeper mastery of French expression beyond the classroom.
