A Door Without a House
Narrated by Fatima, a quiet teacher from Muscat, the novel unfolds along the restless shores of the Strait of Hormuz. Amid rising tensions, closed schools, departing ships, and unfinished news, Fatima finds herself sharing an old, weather-worn house near the coast with three strangers who become family: Hashim, a skilled Iraqi repairman who mends broken chairs, leaking roofs, and wounded hearts; Zainab, a Kuwaiti woman who collects empty notebooks and colored pens as safe places for unspoken words; and Salem, a taciturn Saudi who understands that doors are not merely wood and hinges but promises of entry, permission to leave, and boundaries that must be respected.
In the courtyard stands an ancient eucalyptus tree older than their collective fear, its trunk carved with names of those who passed through or vanished. They name the house simply "The Door."
Across nearly one hundred short chapters divided into movements-The Ebb, The Time of the Tide, Voices of the Returnees, What the Children Say to the Sea, The Season of Wind, and What Remains After the Wave-the novel traces how these four outsiders gather the fragments of stories left behind. Children draw black ships and white ones, write names that refuse to disappear, and exchange letters with a class on the opposite shore. Messages arrive in bottles, late letters name the missing, a ship that never sank is sought, and a notebook of the absent is kept open. Doors are painted white, an eastern window is left ajar against the wind, and the house is slowly repaired.
The narrative is never about one war or one country. It is about what happens when people must leave a place-or return to find it changed-and about the quiet courage of keeping a seat empty, writing a name before speaking it, and refusing to let anyone vanish completely. In the end the house remains open: not to save the world, but so that no one is entirely lost.
