In civil society work, Karim is co-founder of Malawi Media Women's Association that established Malawi's first community radio station (Dzimwe Community Radio) 1995, supported with funds from UNESCO.

Karim lives in the US and has five children (two daughters and three sons) and 20 grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren.

Janet Zeenat Karim is Malawi's renowned media professional with an illustrious publishing career spanning over 40 years in print, broadcast, and social media environments. She has experience with K-12 and adult formal and informal classroom environments. A keen Sunday school instructor and a devout Christian with a passion for telling children's biblical stories. As a radio broadcaster, she created her signature children's radio show, Slap Me Five! God is Alive! Series that she presented in three radio stations.
