In 1625, a Dutch fleet seized the Bay of San Juan. General Bauwen Heijndricxsz, at the head of 17 ships, arrived in Puerto Rico to extend a bloody conflict rooted in the heart of Europe-the Thirty Years' War. It was a memorable chapter of seventeenth-century Puerto Rican history, marked by skirmishes, dagger and sword duels, and even perilous maritime incursions from Santo Domingo, Havana, and the island's interior-operations that proved decisive in outmaneuvering the Dutch fleet and supplying the defenders of the fortress of San Felipe del Morro.
