Two Lessons in Philosophy brings philosophical thought into the living reality of a school classroom. In this play in two acts, a group of perceptive young pupils discover that Philosophy is not merely a collection of theories to be memorised, but a way of confronting the questions that shape human life.During the first lesson, an open-minded teacher invites his pupils to speak honestly about what concerns them. Their conversation gradually moves towards some of life's most difficult experiences: death, serious illness, parental separation, love, an unexpected pregnancy and the responsibility of making decisions whose consequences may last a lifetime. The teacher does not impose ready-made answers. He listens, questions and helps the pupils discover their own capacity for reflection, courage and mutual care.In the second act, his place is taken by a teacher who regards Philosophy as examinable material rather than a living practice. Her attachment to authority, textbooks and predetermined answers brings her into conflict with pupils who have already experienced a very different kind of education. The contrast between the two lessons raises a decisive question: is Philosophy defined by what is taught, or by the spirit in which teacher and pupils think together?Combining philosophical dialogue, educational reflection and theatrical drama, Two Lessons in Philosophy explores the relationship between knowledge and wisdom, authority and freedom, teaching and human concern. It is a work about the classroom as a community of thought—and about the transformative power of a teacher who respects young people not simply as pupils, but as thinking human beings.
