Two Lessons in Philosophy brings philosophical thought into the living reality of a school classroom. In this play in two acts, a group of perceptive young pupils discover that Philosophy is not merely a collection of theories to be memorised, but a way of confronting the questions that shape human life.During the first lesson, an open-minded teacher invites his pupils to speak honestly about what concerns them. Their conversation gradually moves towards some of life's most difficult experiences: death, serious illness, parental separation, love, an unexpected pregnancy and the responsibility of making decisions whose consequences may last a lifetime. He listens, questions and helps the pupils discover their own capacity for reflection, courage and mutual care.In the second act, his place is taken by a teacher who regards Philosophy as examinable material rather than a living practice. Her attachment to authority, textbooks and predetermined answers brings her into conflict with pupils who have already experienced a very different kind of education.
