Pillow Grass is a narrative of what the author Qing Shaonayan saw and heard in the court. It is full of the subtle beauty of the changes in the four seasons that the author feels, as well as the momentary beauty of the mottled customs and worldliness of the Heian period, the complex world of human relationships, and the trivial things in daily life. The author is a middle-class aristocrat. Although this work reflects the inequality between social classes and worries about the times, it focuses on the praise of the queen and the affirmation of the Japanese aristocratic society. Prior to Pillow Grass, Japanese monogatari literature and diary literature had appeared in Japan. Pillow Grass opened up a new field and laid the foundation for Japanese prose.
