I was 38 when I took my 9 year old son to a National Trust manor house in the heart of Devon during a hot July afternoon in 2003. At the time, I told myself it was just a simple day out, something quiet and harmless to fill the school holidays while life at home was already beginning to come apart. But from the moment we stepped inside that house, something about it felt wrong in a way I could not explain to anyone without sounding foolish. What unsettled me most was not fear at first, but the creeping sense that the house knew my son before I did. The deeper we went, the more I felt a change in him and in myself, as if we had walked into the middle of someone else's grief and had not understood it until it was too late. I kept trying to be sensible. I kept telling myself there had to be an explanation. But some places hold on to loss so tightly that it does not stay in the past.Even now, years later, I cannot think about that day without feeling the same dread rise in me. It was not just the house that frightened me. It was the terrible feeling that a mother's love, if twisted by death and time, can become something you cannot reason with.
