The Foregone: Teachers From the Water opens with a dying carver sealing a warning into stone above a rising sea, and spends eight chapters chasing the same figure across the ancient world — a teacher who arrives after catastrophe, gives a people the arts of civilization, and departs without ever taking a throne. The book names him case by case: Oannes rising from the Persian Gulf to teach Sumer writing and law; Viracocha ordering the heavens over Lake Titicaca before walking into the Pacific; Thoth and Osiris carrying Egypt's intellectual and practical arts out of a primordial flood; the Nommo of the Dogon; Fuxi deriving China's founding cosmology from reading the sky.The book's spine is a running argument with itself. Each chapter states the strongest mainstream counter-case — independent invention, Jungian archetype, ordinary diffusion — before asking what a shared "e;curriculum"e; of agriculture, writing, mathematics, astronomy, and law, arriving in the same bundle on every shore, actually requires as an explanation. Chapter Five deliberately detonates the tradition's most famous piece of supporting evidence — the Dogon's supposed knowledge of Sirius B — walking through Walter van Beek's 1991 refutation of Marcel Griaule in full, and shows that the underlying pattern survives losing it. Chapter Six leaves myth behind entirely to ask a physical question: could ancient peoples actually have crossed the oceans this story requires? The sweet potato's presence in pre-Columbian Polynesia, carrying its Andean name with it, says yes — and the Pacific gyre system explains both how the crossing was made and why the teachers of myth never seem to sail home. Chapter Seven confronts the identity question directly, clearing away the lost-white-race theory and ancient-astronaut speculation before landing on Population Y — the genuinely unexplained Australasian genetic signal in isolated Amazonian peoples — while being explicit about a correction to the book's own past reliance on Luzia's skull, now overturned by ancient DNA.The book closes by conceding almost everything a skeptic could ask for: agriculture, writing, cities, and law are all handed over to ordinary independent invention. What's left standing is narrower and stranger — a specific, excessive, fear-soaked attention to the sky, identical in emotional register across cultures with no contact, that no planting calendar required. The Author's Note is explicit about method: myths are never used as literal history, only as structure stripped to its skeleton, and the book states plainly that it has tried to concede more than it claims. It ends by handing the argument to Book Four: the teachers pointed at the sky. The next book asks what they saw.
