John Steinbeck una volta scrisse che il suo amico Robert Capa sapeva che "non si può fotografare la guerra, perché si tratta per lo più di un'emozione". Tuttavia, continuava Steinbeck, "riuscì a catturare quell'emozione scattando accanto a essa. Era in grado di mostrare l'orrore patito da un intero popolo sul volto di un bambino". Il volume propone novantotto scatti in bianco e nero, che ripercorrono gli eventi più salienti e tragici del secolo scorso, dalla guerra civile spagnola alla Seconda guerra mondiale, alla nascita dello stato d'Israele, e includono una serie di ritratti degli amici di Capa, famosi artisti come Ernest Hemingway, William Faulkner, Henri Matisse e Pablo Picasso.
