Eugene Sue (1804-1857) zählte zu den Erfindern des "Feuilletonromans" und war zu seiner Zeit einer der meistgelesenen und einflussreichsten Romanciers Frankreichs. Anfang der vierziger Jahre des 19. Jahrhunderts wurde das Leben Sues durch einen großen Wandel vom unpolitischen Dandy zum engagierten Sozialisten gekennzeichnet. Den Grund für alle menschliche Leiden fand er jetzt im Egoismus der politischen Organisation und machte die ganze Gesellschaft, vor allem die aristokratische, für die Laster des Proletariats verantwortlich.§Der Roman Der ewige Jude wurde in den Jahren 1844-1845 geschrieben und mit zu der Zeit besonders aktuellen politischen Fragen gefüllt. Er wurde rasch zum Erfolg und zum großen Ereignis im sozialen Leben Frankreichs.
