Seven years have passed. Aethelred's successor, Aelfwold, has been murdered by the nobleman Sicga, who has installed a new king, Osred. The people of Northumbria suffer under the heavy taxes of these pious kings and the tithes of the greedy bishops. Sicga plots to remove Osred and reinstall Aethelred as king.
